Check coverage before you travel. A plan card and a road map beside a packed bag.

Your bag is packed for a few weeks away. Then you remember a routine visit you may need while you’re gone. The plan card fits in your wallet. That doesn’t tell you what the plan will cover in another town.

Today’s check takes about 10 minutes.

What’s happening now?

Medicare open enrollment runs through December 7. With holiday travel coming up, use that window to ask how a plan handles care away from home. A Medicare Advantage plan may treat a planned visit outside its network differently from emergency or urgently needed care. A network is the group of providers that work with the plan.

Has this happened before?

When Medicare added more kinds of plans

An illustrated reconstruction of the U.S. example.

In 1997, Congress passed a law that created a new part of Medicare called Medicare+Choice. It took effect in January 1999. The law set up a way for more kinds of private plans to serve people with Medicare. It added a choice people could make about how they would receive their benefits.

One kind of plan was a health maintenance organization, or HMO. Another was a preferred provider organization, or PPO. Those names described types of plans. They did not tell someone all the details of getting care. A person still had to read the rules of the plan offered in their area.

Congress renamed the program Medicare Advantage in 2003. It is still called Part C. People can use a Medicare Advantage plan as a way to get their Medicare benefits. But two plans can have different rules about which providers to use for a routine service and what the member will pay.

That matters if part of your year is spent in a different place. Think of someone who spends a month with family and expects to need a planned follow-up visit. A plan might work well for regular visits at home. The question for that month is whether the person can get that same kind of visit away from home, and on what terms.

The history helps explain why the plan name on a card can leave a question unanswered. A plan is both a way to get benefits and a set of rules for using them. The second part matters when your address for the week is different from the one on your mail.

What happened next?

The question before a trip is which care your plan will cover where you are going.

What can I do?

An HMO usually requires you to use its network for routine care. A PPO may cover some out-of-network services at higher cost. Medicare Advantage plans cover emergency and urgently needed care even when you’re out of network. In an emergency, get help right away.

Set up the check with the supplies you already have.

1. Pick one trip within the United States and one planned visit you might need during it. Write down the destination ZIP code.

2. Call the number on your plan card. Ask where you could get that routine service, whether it is covered, and what you would pay.

3. Write down the answer and the date. If you’re comparing next year’s plans, ask each plan the same question for the same ZIP code.
